I am Bilal Nasir Zargar, creating this blogger for the youth of Kashmir
to get the interest towards untouched biodiversity of Kashmir.
Dear friends our mission is to: Uncover the
important species and promote Biodiversity of Kashmir, and study the form,
function, development, diversity, reproduction, and uses of plants and animals
and their interactions within the biosphere. To accomplish this mission, the
objectives of This Youth Society are to: sustain and provide improved formal
and informal education about plants and animals to the humankind through
publications, meetings, and committees. I request all the youth and and
well-wishers of Kashmir to support the society.
Now i would like to describe briefly the
flora and fauna of Kashmir.
Kashmir is rich in the cultural
diversity of the people, as well as diversity of flora and fauna in the forest
areas, and domesticated species outside the forest. Plant diversity is the life
support of almost all terrestrial eco-systems, with both humans and animals
being entirely dependent on plants directly or indirectly.
The Kashmir has a fairly rich diversity
of plant life, and on this the people depend for their daily needs of food,
medicine, fuel, fiber, etc. The varied plant life also contributes to the food
and habitat needs of the wild and domesticated animals in the state. Plants are
also an integral part of the social fabric of the state. The environmental,
social and economic values of plants are very well known. On the other hand,
the faunal component of the bio-diversity of the state is rich, with
interesting and unique forms both in the forest zones and above the
forest-line. The variety of animal forms ranges from higher groups like
vertebrates, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and lower groups
like invertebrates including insects and even unicellular micro-organisms.
Flora:
Cradled in the lap of the Himalayas the
Kashmir is particularly rich is flora. Due to the wide variations in
topography, the region has a large variety of species. There is no wonder that
its flora ranges from the thorn bush type of the arid plains to the temperate
and alpine flora of the higher altitudes. Prominent among the trees are maple,
horse chestnuts, silver fir, etc. At the higher altitudes there are birch,
rhododendron, Berbers and a large number of herbal plants.
Fauna:
Fauna in the Kashmir region
include animals like the Snow Leopard, Hangul, Chiru, and the Yak.
Over 100 species of birds make their home in this rugged terrain.Commonly
spotted animals include the Marmot, the Himalayan Ibex, the serow,
nilgai, the black bear and the musk deer.
The Hangul has been declared as an endangered species. This animal is
found all over the Kashmir valley.
Some of the commonly sighted birds in Kashmir are the Nightingale, Hud
Hud, Ranga, Bul Bul and the King Fisher.
